Adkins was born to a young single mother in several working-class communities of London. She was fascinated by contemporary pop music as a child and was proficient at playing the guitar and clarinet. It wasn't until she was in her teens that she was exposed to Etta James, a blues and rhythm performer, as well as other artists of the mid-20th century, that she started to think about a career in music. She was in a secondary school for the performing and visual arts that was funded by the government. One of her friends posted songs Adkins composed on Myspace. Following her graduation, Adkins' music caught the attentions of record labels. She got a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
